What I like in: Brogue
Start of a short series on media I like to borrow ideas from for DND! For today, Brogue the computer roguelike!
- Gas traps! No immediate harm but you gotta think quick of what to do, where to run etc. Nearest door? Or brave the unexplored as a last resort?
- On that, explosive gases! Underground is full of those!
- Monsters with environmental effects! A zombie while formidable on it's own fills the room with nauseous odor making everyone puke! How cool! An ice spider could freeze the floor in a room, making for a unique challenge.
- Intradungeonic lakes! While the game nature of brogue lets the game show you many things at once across the dungeon lake, giving information and warnings of danger, a DM should be more restrictive in what can be seen on the other side of the water. Also, swimming! Make em big!
- Level drops! Falling down doesn't have to mean death, and involuntarily being place in the middle of an unexplored level with your torch lost and butt sore creates a lot of tension! Roll a d6 for loosing grip of the item you're holding!
